Why I Choose a Word of the Year
I have been prayerfully choosing a word of the year since before it was “the thing” to do. I don’t remember what inspired me to do this, but it is a tradition that I look forward to every year. It helps keep me centered and focused because I keep coming back to it over and over.
My word of the year used to apply to just my personal life, but now they apply to both my personal life and my business.
How I Choose my Word
Usually in December I start thinking about my current word of the year and how it has applied to my life that year. I typically journal about it as well.
There is something so therapeutic about putting pen to paper and reflecting. I also journal about my hopes for the new year, my dreams and aspirations, and my goals.
I take note of any themes or words that I use more than once. Sometimes my word comes to me right away and sometimes it takes time. I don’t put any pressure on myself.
My word for 2023 didn’t come to me right away. I did a brain dump in my journal of a lot of different words that were rolling around in my head. I went back and read every word I wrote down, and there it was.
My 2023 Word of the Year
It’s actually two words…
This year I am letting go of anything that does not serve me or align with my purpose both personally and professionally.
How I am Implementing “Let Go”
No more wasted energy on things that do not matter in the grand scheme of things.
If it steals my joy or distracts me from my purpose, it has got to go.
I will be spending some quiet time journaling about my business goals and personal goals in the next week. I will be keeping “let go” top of mind when setting my goals.
A Fun Reminder
For the past three years, I have purchased a bracelet with my word personalized on it. It’s a great daily reminder every time that I look at my wrist.
Do you choose a word for your year? I would love to know what it is in the comments!
Cheers to an incredible 2023!
